Traditional soap bars are a hidden hazard, especially for elderly users and individuals with limited mobility. When wet, soap becomes slippery, leading to frequent drops and dangerous falls. Research revealed that over 15,000 ER visits annually are caused by soap-related slips, with elderly users being the most vulnerable. Through user surveys and case studies (like the tragic incident in Bengaluru), we identified that 70-80% of users frequently drop soap during use. This highlighted a significant gap in the market: while most soap brands focus on moisturizing or aesthetics, none address the functional issue of slippage.
We began by brainstorming solutions that could improve grip and safety. Concepts ranged from soap trays and bands to loofah-integrated designs. After evaluating ideas based on grip, durability, hygiene, and ergonomics, we finalized a loofah-integrated soap holder made from silicone. The design features an anti-slip silicone body that adapts to any soap shape and a loofah mesh for enhanced lathering and gentle exfoliation. Prototypes were created using silicone and loofah mesh, and we iterated based on user feedback to ensure the design was both functional and user-friendly.
To bring the concept to life, we created handmade prototypes using silicone and loofah mesh. The prototypes were tested for grip, durability, and hygiene, with a focus on user feedback. Key iterations included:
Adjusting the silicone thickness for better flexibility and grip.
Refining the loofah mesh attachment for easier cleaning and exfoliation.
Ensuring the design was safe for elderly users and those with limited mobility.
The prototyping phase was crucial in refining the product to ensure it was both functional and user-friendly.
The final product, Foammate, is a durable, eco-friendly soap holder that prevents slips and falls. Key features include:
Anti-slip silicone grip for secure handling, even in wet conditions.
Loofah mesh for better lathering and exfoliation.
Easy to clean and prevents bacterial growth.
Foammate addresses the needs of vulnerable groups like the elderly, pregnant women, and individuals with limited mobility, reducing the risk of bathroom accidents. It also fills a gap in the market by prioritizing functionality and safety over aesthetics.
