I had the exciting opportunity to design a chess set inspired by a company, and I chose Teenage Engineering for their bold, playful, and minimalist aesthetic. Known for their vibrant colors, modular designs, and retro-futuristic style—like the iconic OP-1 synthesizer—they inspired me to create a chess set that feels like a natural extension of their world. My goal was to blend clean lines, striking colors, and a tactile, engaging quality that invites players to dive in. Using Shaper 3D, Rhino, and KeyShot, I brought this vision to life with energy and precision.
SKETCHING
I began with sketches to explore shapes that captured Teenage Engineering’s geometric design language. I experimented with cylindrical and cubic forms, incorporating bold colors and subtle textures to make each piece stand out while maintaining a cohesive look. My aim was to create a set that felt both functional and full of personality, ready to spark joy on the board.
Using Shaper 3D and Rhino, I modeled the chess pieces and board with a focus on modularity—each piece feels like it could belong in a Teenage Engineering product lineup. The board features a grid of circular cutouts, adding a playful twist to the classic chessboard design. In KeyShot, I fine-tuned the lighting to highlight the textures and colors, giving the pieces a sleek, futuristic glow. The final renders present the set in a clean, minimalist environment, letting the design take center stage.
The result is a chess set that’s both practical and captivating—a true reflection of Teenage Engineering’s spirited aesthetic. The pieces are bold yet streamlined, featuring a vibrant color palette of red, yellow, blue, and white, paired with a sleek black-and-white board. This set is designed to inspire play, admiration, and creativity, much like a Teenage Engineering creation. It’s a perfect blend of strategy and style!.
